“O Lord save us from the fury of the Northmen.”

"A sword age, a wind age, a wolf age,
no longer is there mercy among men."

The Sybil's Prophecy,
circa 1000 AD

In the 8th century AD the Vikings exploded onto the civilized world. Coming out of the mists of the North beyond the Christian pale they raided with an unholy fury, raining war on all they met. Consumate warriors and sailors even the rumor of their coming spread fear. The rapidity and ferocity of their attacks launched from their fast shallow draft ships gave little time for defense.

Yet here were men who wrought exquistely beautiful swords and metal work, their sword smith’s used methods of pattern welding and cryogenic quenching. The Vikings admired the sword above all weapons and gave them fierce names. In the abstract imagery of their saga’s the sword became “a lightning flash of blood”. The Vikings could sail across the Atlantic to the new world, yet knew no master, even among themselves they were all equal. Their women could own property and divorce and death to any man who violated a free woman against her will. Their influence upon the world, both Christian and Muslim, ancient and modern, was extraordinary.
